Asian Leopards and Bengal Cats
|

An Asian Leopard Cat (ALC) is not a domestic cat. That
should seem obvious to most people but in some ways it is
not so obvious to everyone. Each kitten has to be raised
with tremendous time and work. It is not their nature to
love on people but they can certainly do just that if they are
raised correctly. If you are looking for a pet, it is strongly
recommended that you spay or neuter your cat at a young
age. If you have ever been around a teenager or can really
remember your own teenage years than you know what
hormones can do. I have whole ALCs that I can handle
with ease but if they are going to revert, it will most likely
be when the hormones hit.
Cherie and I are doing a little experiment at this time. I
have always been told that they must be taken from their
mom by 10 days of age at the latest. We decided to see if
this really was correct. We left Tibet on her mom until she
was 2 weeks old. She has been with Cherie for a week now
and has lost her usual hiss. This is something that we will
continue to work on in the future. We want to give the
most maternal nutrition and at the same time be able to
fully tame them to the human touch.
Many of our cubs do use the litter box. Many ALCs or F1s
will prefer to use water. They might use a water bowl, the
tub or if you are lucky, they will train them self to the toilet
bowl. (It really has to be their idea you know.)
We are now feeding our cats Zupreem. It is a canned food.
I will also be mixing it with raw food. While I like the raw
for these cats, the fact is that they are so prone to kidney
failure especially as they age and the all protein diet can
really contribute to this.
I would suggest that you also read my care of F1 page as
many of the characteristics are the same or at least very
similar.
And here I am again trying to explain the impossible. What
are they really like? If you are a Bengal person and you
have or have had an F1 then you have a pretty good idea.
But the truth is that the ALC is not just like an F1, they
are special in their own right. They are loving,
tremendously smart, bold, shy, faster than you could ever
imagine and so much more.
They need the same medical care as a regular cat. You do
need to be careful that they do not develop bad eating
habits such as a carpet etc. Ares cannot have a cat tree as
he likes to eat carpet and can become impacted all too
easily.
I hope that this helps. They are wonderful, they are
magnificent and they are just what they are. They are a
wild animal that has been tamed. If you want the cat to
remain tame then you need to completely isolate that cat
from all other animals for a period of time so that they will
bond with just you and not that other animal. Then you
must continue to give them love and attention.
